How quickly it fades depends on several factors:

• The technique used — each technique stays in the skin for a different length of time
• Your skin — oily skin fades faster than dry skin
• Your lifestyle — if you exercise, spend time in the sun or sweat a lot, it fades faster than for someone who mostly works in an air-conditioned office

Scalp micropigmentation is a specialist discipline. Even artists who already tattoo other areas have to build a separate skill set for it, the experts who can pass it on are few and mostly overseas, so getting there is costly.

It also needs a highly experienced artist, far fewer artists can actually do it than general tattooing, and each session takes about twice as long as a brow appointment, which demands real stamina from the artist.

It differs from case to case — it depends on the size of the area being treated, how readily your skin takes pigment, and the technique used. Some cases need more than one technique, sometimes two or three on the same head, depending on the specialist’s assessment on the day. So the time varies with each case.

Everyone’s pigment fades at a different rate, depending on the technique, your skin type (oily or dry), how much you sweat and your daily lifestyle. Regular exercise, sun exposure or swimming in chlorinated pools will make it fade faster than usual.

We recommend a top-up before the colour has faded more than 50% from when it was first done. For some people that is once a year, for others every two years. Keep an eye on whether you are still happy with the colour — or, if unsure, send a photo to our specialist and ask whether it is time.
